Jann Scott: business profile of a Boulder success story
Enigma? Brilliant Businessman? Wild Card? “Benevolent Dictator”
Poised to become Boulders next multi-millionaire here’s another look.
Those who know Jann Scott may be familiar with his outrageous TV shows and shenanigans but Scott has much more going for himself. He’s not new to business.
His World Channel 1 internet only TV and the Channel 1 Networks LLC were created ahead of their time. Jann Scott is a visionary. Streaming TV was unheard of and in 1998 Scott knew TV would go to the internet.
“Boulder Channel 1 was designed to be replicated in every city around the world,” he said.
For his innovative internet TV network, Jann Scott can be considered a pioneer like Bill Daniels who developed cable TV or even Rupert Murdock. Before there was You Tube and Google, there was Jann Scott designing the financial model for online TV
First some business history. He grew up around business and was fortunate to have a father who started Scott in business as a child. Jann Scott grew up in a small town near Waterbury, Connecticut. It was an industrial manufacturing center for the USA. At dinner, his family would discuss business and politics. The children would be quizzed on trends and the state of the union.
His father assigned him a job every year. By the age of 5 he was being groomed as an entrepreneur. By 14 he built construction projects and was foreman for construction projects owned by his father. At 15 his father gave him a position with the accountants and investment offices of his company and Scott was responsible for managing the company’s portfolio. He bought Zerox as an IPO which, obviously, pleased his father. At 16, he managed another of his father’s companies. Throughout this time he learned hard work, discipline, planning, scheduling and more withpractical hands-on experience. He also learned that he didn’t like working for others. He was groomed to be a CEO from the beginning.
Scott said he has about 20 full time and part time employees working for Channel One Networks llc. “We work 24/7 and holidays,” he said. and someone is always online. His employees are not be afraid to work.
“I’ve turned down large venture capital money for Channel 1, because they would be in control,” he said. “And, we’re not going to franchise this company,” he said strongly.
Former Vice President of the Boulder Daily Camera said, Jann is his own person. Another Boulder billionaire said, ” Jann makes money and he’s alway a good investment” even though Jann turned down his money.
Today Scott uses basic business principles he learned at a young age. And, he said he learned early on what it is to be an American and what free enterprise was all about.
Over the years, Jann Scott has owned and operated several businesses including promoting concerts, publishing, transportation and radio/TV production.
Jann Scott said his company is now in the process of blending the various names which are under his network like Restaurant Channel 1 and News Channel 1.
Recent online media reports The world channels to be worth a billion dollars, “It grew so fast with the build-out on The world Channel 1 Network that we are now concentrating on our local Boulder Channel 1 one to prove the financial model.” Scot said. Rather a reversal of what business usually does,” he said referring to how most companies start locally and grow globally.
“We’re here to save You Tube and Google” he said. He said his company is interested in seeing it all continue and possibly buy Google, Time-Warner, or some entity with media networks set up. Or they “buy us” he said.
His company is a global corporation building a major worldwide TV network and poised to be bigger than cable networks combined. Some of his Channel 1 network channels are in Paris, Colorado Springs and Denver. “We’re kind of like You Tube meets Craigslist,” he said. ”The point is we have a sucessful financial model which most social media companies do not have” Jann said
The world channel 1 networks soon to beocme channel One Networks also develops web sites and manages them, produces TV commercials and video documentaries for local channels and everything is produced locally. The Company has music, automobiles, food and news channels and each is self-sustaining. They take up 7.5 terabytes and have thousands of pages each one sponsored by advertising.
There are difficulties with such a virtual setting because it is difficult to set up local offices. “We look for dedicated hard working people who like to work,” he said. Local sponsors support the offices. He indicated that his whole life is dedicated to this internet TV network and “getting it done.” Jann Scott is multi-talented and looks to find like-minded people.
For his personal life he has many long time friends and a bevy of starlets who work for the network. He remains single.“
