2011 Denver Auto Show: See the Electric Cars You Have Been Reading About

Jonathan McGrewBy Jonathan McGrewContributing WriterMarch 28th, 2011

For those who live in Colorado the environment is a pretty serious thing. We have all see the brown cloud that sometimes comes to visit downtownDenver due to the bowl effect of the foothills. We also know as consumers we can make a change in our lifestyles to help reduce emissions that cause that brown cloud and harm the environment. Sunday we reported on the Car Parade, one of the only (if not the only) of its kind in the U.S. where new “green” cars are featured. Some are greener than others, but the idea is to educate consumers on the choices that are out there for them. Keeping with that theme the 2011 Denver Auto Show will feature all-electric and plug-in electric vehicles. You know there names too—LEAF, Volt, CR-Z and Prius. Now you can see them in person at this year’s 2011 Denver Auto Show.

This is an exciting year for the Denver Auto Show and for consumers and journalists in the Rocky Mountain region. Colorado is a state that believes in “green” products and some of the population has already embraced electric cars—at least if you can afford a . That said, it isn’t unusual to see a Tesla in downtown Denver or downtown Boulder. Colorado is also home to innovators likeLightning Hybrids who work on fleet hybrid conversions and hybrid . The big change from last year’s Denver Auto Show—the electric car. So come out to the show and ask questions of the manufacturers and show them how much interest we have in being green and building a recharging infrastructure with their help. The west coast isn’t the only place that wants to save their environment; Colorado folk are pretty darn proud of the Rockies (mountains not baseball thought we do appreciate our baseball team too) and we would like them to stay unpolluted.

Bottom line—if you have been waiting to see an electric car up close and in person then the 2011 Denver Auto Show is a must. You can even drive a Volt through the manufacturer Ride and Drive program (more info here). So be sure to visit the Volt, Honda CR-Z SEMA, and Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid.

While the cars are the stars of the Auto Show in Denver, there’s a full range of activities to make it a fun outing for the whole family. The Denver Auto Show is a place where auto enthusiasts, potential buyers, and people who are looking for a fun day out can come together. Whether you’ve come to shop for a vehicle, to share your passion for cars with others, or just to have some fun with your family and friends, the Denver Auto Show is more than a showroom for the latest model year vehicles – it’s an event! Showcases Styling, Performance & Auto Accessories Showcase

Offering a world of possibilities to customize your vehicle, and featuring performance tires, racing additions, mobile electronics, accessory add-ons, and more, the Styling, Performance & Auto Accessories Showcase is the single largest marketplace in Denver for the purchase of aftermarket products.

Green Car Parade Kicks Off Countdown to 2011 Denver Auto Show

Jonathan McGrewBy Jo
Small cars are our business here at AllSmallCars.com and we love an event that features small cars—especially when a lot of press and consumers are around. Today marked the 4th Annual Car Parade in Denver, Colo., where dealers from around the state bring their greenest cars to be a part of a static parade at the State Capital building. It is probably no surprise that these cars are soon headed to be on the floor of the 2011 Denver Auto Show that will start with a ribbon cutting on Wednesday, March 30th at 6 p.m. It might not surprise you either that the majority of cars on display are small cars.
Tim Jackson, PresidentColorado Automobile Dealers Association(CADA), was on hand today to kick of the event and talk the Clear the Air Foundation that not only benefits the environment, but promotes new “green” cars. The Clear the Air Foundation (CTAF) was formed in 2007 according to the foundation website and is incorporated under the State of Colorado laws as a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization. The purpose of the organization is to “lessen the amount of pollution emitted by old or not properly maintained vehicles on Colorado’s roads.” In addition to removing older high polluting vehicles, the foundation strives to educate consumers about new cars and how the manufacturers are making changes to reduce their impact on the environment.

“One 15-20 year old vehicle pollutes equivalent to that of 100 new cars that you would find in a dealers new car showroom,” said Tim Jackson today during the Green Car Parade. “By taking four older polluting vehicle off the road University professor Don Stedman, PhD, says you can move the pollution needle.” We should be clear here, the CTAF isn’t after your prized 1972 Corvette or even your collectible ‘80s Givenchy Lincoln Continental. The vehicle the CTAF is looking to mitigate in favor of newer, smaller, safer and more efficient cars are those poorly kept vehicles that pollute significantly and require recondition that is unlikely do to the value of the car. “We are talking about those cars that you sit behind at the stoplight and then you wait a few seconds after the light turns green for the cloud to disappear so you can see where you are going,” Jackson said during his public address.

The program has made agreements with dealerships in the Denver Metro area to donate four high-polluting cars to the Clear the Air Foundation cause each year. These cars will be dismantled and the parts will be provided to reconditions for reuse and sale, with a couple of exceptions. The engine, frame and body will be crushColorado Clear the Air Foundationed and recycled into renewable steel components so that those particular vehicles will not pollute again. The program is the only one we are aware of in the U.S. and according to Jackson a program that will change public policy.

Powerful, edgy, fuel efficient – Denver Auto Show has them all

Climb a mountain and rattle your bones on a ride without ever leaving the Colorado Convention Center. Yep, you can go off-roading next week at the Denver Auto Show in Camp Jeep, a unique driving course that Chrysler Group is bringing to Denver for the first time to showcase its newly redesigned Jeep Grand Cherokee. Camp Jeep will put show-goers in the passenger seat as professional drivers run the 4WD vehicles through some grueling paces. It’s just one exciting feature of this year’s show, open Wednesday through Sunday, for a five-day run.

The addition of Camp Jeep will make the 2011 Denver Auto Show the largest consumer show in the history of the Colorado Convention Center and expand the auto show’s total footprint to a half-million square feet – the biggest in the 109 history of the show.

Consumers caught between a still-rebounding economy and rising gasoline prices will have a lot to interest them. “This is the place you don’t have to travel to, but where you can see new technology and some future technology coming rapidly down the road,” said Don Gerbaz of Berthod Motors in Glenwood Springs, chairman of the Colorado Automobile Dealers Association.

More than 500 vehicles from 30 manufacturers, plus accessories and aftermarket products will be displayed. “If you can’t find something at this auto show that excites you and fits your transportation needs, it may not exist,” said Mark Wallace of Schomp Automotive, Denver Auto Show chairman. “There’s everything from practical, to fun, to fantasy.”

The latest in electric and hybrid technology will be highlighted, including the Chevrolet Volt, Nissan LEAF and Toyota Prius plug-in electric vehicles, plus many efficient non-electrics, like the 2012 Fiat 500 with an anticipated 40 mpg.

The latest in electric and hybrid technology will be highlighted, including the Chevrolet Volt, Nissan LEAF and Toyota Prius plug-in electric vehicles, plus many efficient non-electrics, like the 2012 Fiat 500 with an anticipated 40 mpg.

Honda will show off its CR-Z sport hybrid concept car, illustrating that energy-efficient doesn’t have to mean boring. GM’s cutting-edge Sierra All-Terrain HD concept will also be on display. The Denver Auto Show is also where you’ll see exotic, high-end models such as Aston Martin, Bentley, Rolls Royce, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Lotus and Maserati.

A popular show offering will be “Ride and Drives” so attendees can both see anddrive new vehicles – with no pressure to buy. They can sign up to test drive one or more of 11 models from four manufacturers: GM, Ford, Chrysler and Kia. Test-drive vehicles will run from small to large, and may include some electrics, hybrids and trucks. “Ride and Drives” will be available April 1-3 during daylight hours, with some restrictions.

“What Will Fuel the Future?” is a special exhibit to entertain and educate. Kids can see how various forms of energy work and the differences between renewable and non-renewable energy.

The fourth annual “Green Car Parade” on from 2pm to 3pm, Sunday, March 27, will demonstrate new “green” cars which are already available, including the ultra-luxe Bentley Continental flex-fuel. They’ll be in static parade on the State Capitol’s west side.

The Auto Show kicks off March 30 with a Charity Preview Party, benefiting Denver Post Community Charities and the Clear the Air Foundation, which supports efforts that help Coloradans with environmentally related breathing issues. Colorado dealers donate old, polluting trade-in vehicles and recycle their materials for reuse. “People trade in high-emission vehicles all the time and instead of wholesaling them, or sending them out-of-state, donate them to the foundation. We get them off the road and improve air quality,” said foundation chairman Lee Payne of Planet Honda. Party tickets are available for $95 atwww.CharityPreviewParty.com.
