Boulder awarded 2010 Federal Safe Routes to School funding

The City of Boulder has been awarded $198,230 by the Colorado Department of Transportation's Colorado Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program. The funds will be used to construct the Four Mile Creek greenway trail between 28th and 26th streets and will benefit Crest View Elementary School and Centennial Middle School students, families, faculty and staff.

The Colorado Safe Routes to School program offers schools and community groups the funding they need to provide SRTS programs. This includes safety education, promotion and engineering solutions that encourage students to get the exercise they need to lead happy and healthy lives. Through SRTS, the city works in partnership with the Boulder Valley School District (BVSD) to address the physical environment and social impediments to walking and biking to school.

“The City of Boulder to date has received more than $900,000 for infrastructure improvements through the SRTS program,” said Director of Public Works for Transportation Tracy Winfree. “These federal funds have allowed us to build a number of projects that make it easier, safer and more convenient for students and their families to bike and walk to school.”

A total of 19 elementary and middle schools have benefited from SRTS funds within the City of Boulder. Fifteen of these are BVSD schools and four are private schools.

Childhood obesity rates have more than tripled in the past 30 years while the number of children walking and biking to school has declined. According to the 2001 National Household Travel Survey, less than 16 percent of students between the ages of five and 15 walked or biked to or from school, compared to 42 percent in 1969.

Through the 2005 passage of the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users (SAFETEA-LU), Congress designated a total of $612 million toward developing the National Safe Routes to School Program.
