Latest Boulder News:

City to conduct prescribed grassland burns in April

The City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) department and the Boulder Fire Department will be conducting a prescribed grassland burn sometime during the remainder of April 2010. The burn will be conducted only if environmental and weather conditions fall within city burn plan guidelines. Ignitions will not begin before 10 a.m. and will end no later than 2 p.m. The burns will not occur on Mondays or Fridays.

Prescribed burns will be conducted at the following sites:

  • OSMP Stengel I property, a 20 acre site is located west of Hwy. 93 and north of Eldorado Springs Drive, in the vicinity of the Bluestem Trail; and

· OSMP Van Vleet property, a 25 acre site, located west of South Boulder Creek and south of South Boulder Road.

Boulder's ecosystems have evolved with fire over thousands of years. The prescribed burning of these areas will improve the habitats for native plants and wildlife.

For questions about prescribed burning on OSMP properties, contact Steve Mertz at 303-921-1797or visit www.OSMP.org.

City reminds residents that there is no longer a city-sponsored Spring Clean-up Program

With warmer weather around the corner and folks starting to collect yard waste, the city would like to remind residents that there is no longer a city-sponsored Spring Clean-Up program. Please do not place yard waste by the curb, instead residents can:

· Use trash hauler provided compost carts for as many branches and yard waste that will fit;

· Create three bundles of branches that don’t fit in carts (3 feet by 6 feet or less) tied with compostable twine. Make sure each bundle only contains branches that are 6 inches in diameter or less and that the bundle weighs less than 35 pounds; and

· Use the Yard Waste Drop-off Site (free to city residents) located at Western Disposal, 5880 Butte Mill Road. For more information on the Yard Waste Drop-off site, visit www.westerndisposal.com.

During the seasonal fluctuation of yard waste, customers may also increase the size of their compost cart for a fee. Contact your trash hauler for more information on curbside compost collection service.

“Get Involved With Your H20” and help keep creeks and reservoirs clean; informational meeting on Earth Day

Want to help protect local streams and lakes? Like fun, hands-on activities that get people outside and help keep creeks clean? Then team up with the Keep It Clean Partnership, a local program that sponsors many rewarding ways to “Get Involved With Your H2O.”

Spring is the perfect time to get involved. Attend an informational meeting from 6 to 7 p.m. on Earth Day, Thursday, April 22, 2010 at the Main Boulder Public Library, 1001 Arapahoe Ave., with the Keep it Clean Partnership and learn how to get involved and help protect our local streams and waterways.

Here are just some of the ways you can get involved:

1. Mark storm drains- Storm drains lead directly to creeks. By marking them with a “Dispose No Waste, Drains to Creek” message, public awareness is raised and polluted runoff is reduced in the community. Best of all, it’s a one-time activity that’s easy to do, simple enough to include children, and it will remain as a reminder of the community’s efforts to make a positive difference.

2. Form a StreamTeam - Engage a group, large or small, in an ongoing community water stewardship project where they take care or a segment of a local creek and help Keep it Clean. By committing to just a few actions each year, the group will be part of the StreamTeam program and will make a visible and lasting impact on the local environment.

3. Learn about your water - Clubs, HOAs, businesses, and community or neighborhood groups seeking to learn more about local water resources and how to protect and conserve them can schedule a FREE presentation with water experts.

The members of one Boulder family, which has organized a Bear Creek StreamTeam for over two years, consider themselves lucky to share the rewarding experience of volunteering together. “We get water samples from our local stream and perform basic water quality tests,” said Jackie Marrinan, mother. “My boys love science and care about the creek critters. It is a positive way to spend time with my children, and it helps them to take responsibility for the future of our local environment and to become future stewards of our water resources.”

Earth Week is a great time to think about how to help make a difference! Several motivated returning and new StreamTeams have scheduled creek clean ups for this week. Come to the Library on Earth Day for more information on how to join in and to keep it clean… 'cause we're all downstream!

The Keep It Clean Partnership is a group of communities in the Boulder and St. Vrain Creek watersheds working together to protect water quality. Keep It Clean communities include Boulder, Boulder County, Erie, Longmont, Louisville, and Superior. For more information on the many fun, FREE ways you can get involved, call us today at 303-413-7365 or visit us online atKeepItCleanPartnership.org.
